Algiers, Algeria | July 25th, 2024 — On Thursday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune delivered a poignant address during the second edition of the President of the Republic’s Best Exporter Award ceremony in Algiers. This 2023 edition of the event coincided with the celebration of Algeria’s Independence Day, offering a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of the nation’s martyrs and to reaffirm Algeria’s commitment to advancing its economic landscape.
In his opening remarks, President Tebboune paid tribute to Algeria’s historical sacrifices, expressing his pleasure in participating in an event that aligns with the anniversary of the country’s independence. He emphasized the critical need to reduce economic dependency and ensure food security, identifying these as top national priorities.
President Tebboune highlighted the extensive reforms implemented to tackle economic challenges. These reforms focus on enhancing the business climate, promoting foreign trade, encouraging entrepreneurship, advancing digitization, and reforming monetary policy to align Algeria with global economic trends. Despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Algeria has achieved a 4.2% growth rate, a GDP of $260 billion, and foreign exchange reserves totaling $70 billion. Additionally, non-hydrocarbon exports have approached $7 billion, marking a significant milestone.
The President praised these achievements as a testament to Algeria’s strategic resolve and progress. Looking forward, he expressed confidence that ongoing reforms will support the development and diversification of the national economy, with a goal of surpassing a $400 billion GDP by the end of 2027.
Addressing Algeria’s economic revival strategy, President Tebboune stressed the need to harness the full potential of the nation’s economic operators, producers, and exporters. He outlined ambitious targets for Algeria’s foreign trade policy for 2020-2030, aiming for $29 billion in non-hydrocarbon exports by 2030. Investment priorities include agriculture, heavy industries, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, mining, tourism, and services.
The President highlighted major projects such as the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine, which positions Algeria among the world’s top iron ore reserves, and ongoing phosphate and zinc projects aimed at elevating Algeria to major exporter status. He also noted continental infrastructure projects like the Tindouf-Zouerate (Mauritania) road and the Trans-Saharan route from Algiers to Lagos (Nigeria), expected to transform Algeria into a key economic hub for Africa.
To support these objectives, President Tebboune called for continued enhancements to Algeria’s logistics and export infrastructure, including the expansion of free trade zones, the organization of permanent exhibitions of Algerian products, and the opening of Algerian bank branches in Mauritania and Senegal.
Additional recommendations included:
- Redefining Algeria’s external trade map in line with national interests and global geopolitical challenges.
- Liberalizing exports from sectors with surplus production, such as oil, sugar, and pasta.
- Establishing logistics bases for export throughout economic hubs.
- Expanding the Algerian banking network abroad, particularly in Africa.
- Developing air and maritime commercial routes to reinforce Algeria’s regional role.
- Opening investment opportunities for private and foreign operators in large-scale distribution networks.
- Enabling exporters to utilize temporary admission systems to boost exports of high-value products.
In conclusion, President Tebboune expressed his unwavering belief in Algeria’s ability to overcome challenges and enhance its role as a strong, influential, and cooperative partner on regional and international stages. “Long live Algeria,” he concluded, “Glory and eternity to our valiant martyrs.”
