ALGIERS- President Abdelmadjid Tebboune led the official ceremony commemorating International Workers’ Day on Wednesday at the People’s Palace in Algiers.
In his address, President Tebboune highlighted that the observance of this global day provides an opportunity for the Algerian people to recall the long history of struggle led by individuals of integrity, such as the late Aissat Idir, who prioritized the nation’s interests above all else.
“I salute the nationalist spirit and bravery of Abdelhak Benhamouda,” he added, paying homage to another figure of national importance.
Expanding on the nation’s past, President Tebboune reflected on the challenging period before 2019, during the era often referred to as the “band” or the “gang” – a term used to describe the corrupt political elite. He recounted the false narratives of financial incapacity, emphasizing how these narratives aimed to undermine morale: “We will always remember the false speeches claiming that the treasury was incapable of paying workers’ salaries, the decline in foreign exchange reserves, and the corruption that affected all sectors during the decade of ‘Isaba’ rule, during which the working, middle, and poor classes were completely abandoned,” he declared.
President Tebboune stressed that these practices aimed to present Algeria as vulnerable to foreign powers and subject it to external control, highlighting the role of the “Hirak” movement in resisting such efforts: “Fortunately, the blessed ‘Hirak’ saved the country from these practices,” he affirmed.
Additionally, President Tebboune called for the establishment of dialogue and consultation with the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and all free citizens, underlining the importance of national unity and collective involvement in shaping Algeria’s future.
In his speech, the President underscored the resilience of Algerian workers and their crucial role in the nation’s development. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating favorable conditions for workers and ensuring their rights are protected.
President Tebboune’s address highlighted the significance of solidarity and perseverance in overcoming challenges and fostering a prosperous future for Algeria.
