Algiers, Algeria | August 19th, 2024 — In a significant display of regional solidarity, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s prompt decision to provide Lebanon with an emergency supply of fuel has been met with enthusiastic approval from both political and economic leaders across the region. This timely assistance is aimed at alleviating Lebanon’s severe electricity crisis, helping to keep its power plants operational amidst a critical fuel shortage.

Lebanese Minister of Industry Georges Bouchikian expressed profound appreciation for Tebboune’s “noble, sincere, and generous” gesture. He emphasized the deep fraternal bond between Algeria and Lebanon and underscored how this lifeline from President Tebboune has arrived at a pivotal moment, easing the immense pressure on the Lebanese people who were bracing for a total shutdown of the nation’s power plants.

Similarly, Lebanon’s Energy and Water Resources Minister Walid Fayad commended Algeria’s unwavering support, noting that Algeria has repeatedly come to Lebanon’s aid during its most difficult times. Fayad highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations, emphasizing that Algeria’s swift intervention in this moment of crisis once again underscored its commitment to helping Lebanon recover from successive hardships.

The gesture was also lauded by Qablan Qablan, a prominent figure in Lebanon’s Amal Movement, who expressed gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A thousand thanks to Algeria, which never fails to extend a hand of help to Lebanon during its darkest hours. Algeria continues to demonstrate that true fraternity rises above all else.” His sentiments echoed a broader appreciation across Lebanon for Algeria’s steadfast support.

Wissam Aris, President of the Algerian-Lebanese Business Council, offered his sincere thanks to Algeria for this “profound act of affection,” further illustrating the deep-rooted commitment Algeria has shown to Lebanon. Aris affirmed that Lebanon remains indebted to Algeria for its consistent assistance, especially in times of pressing need, and highlighted the lasting gratitude the Lebanese people feel for Algeria’s generosity.

Mohamad Choucair, former Lebanese Minister and head of the economic organization “All for Beirut,” also voiced his appreciation for Algeria’s enduring support. In a heartfelt message shared on X, Choucair praised the brotherly relationship between the two nations, stating, “What Algeria has done for Lebanon over the decades is indelible.” He emphasized that Algeria’s commitment to helping Lebanon withstand its ongoing challenges remains a testament to their close bilateral ties.

Under President Tebboune’s directives, Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui personally informed his Lebanese counterpart, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, of Algeria’s decision to immediately dispatch fuel to Lebanon. The intervention came at a critical juncture as Lebanon’s national electricity provider, Electricité du Liban (EDL), had warned of an impending complete shutdown of power plants due to the depletion of fuel reserves. Algeria’s swift action has provided a much-needed reprieve, ensuring that Lebanon’s energy grid remains functional and the nation’s power stays on amid the crisis.

This decision, which reflects Algeria’s deep commitment to its Arab allies, has not only strengthened the already strong ties between Algeria and Lebanon but also reinforced Algeria’s vital role as a leader in regional cooperation and support during times of crisis. President Tebboune’s initiative has been hailed as a defining moment in fostering unity and providing critical assistance to Lebanon at a time when it is most needed.
