New York, September 20, 2023– President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria delivered a passionate address before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday evening, calling for an extraordinary General Assembly to grant full membership status to Palestine within the international body. Underlining Algeria’s unwavering commitment to defending just causes, President Tebboune emphasized the Palestinian question and the pursuit of an independent state with El Quds as its capital.

“Algeria will not give up supporting just causes, notably the Palestinian question. It works to defend the right of the Palestinian people to build an independent state with El Quds as its capital,” President Tebboune asserted to a captivated audience at the UN headquarters in New York.

President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to the Peace Initiative, initiated by Arab nations, aimed at ending the Zionist occupation in Palestine. He emphasized that the international community must bear its legal and moral responsibility in facilitating the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Furthermore, the Algerian President urged the members of the UN Security Council to adopt a just and equitable solution, while urging an end to “the unilateral decisions of the Zionist entity and its colonizing relays.”

During his address at the 78th session of the General Assembly, President Tebboune commented on the challenges faced by the UN Security Council in recent years, asserting that geopolitical conflicts had weakened its capacity to preserve global peace and security. He noted that the council was increasingly struggling to prevent the use of force and violence, hindering the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

“Crises around the world have reached an unprecedented level, displacing millions of people and transforming international relations into confrontations,” President Tebboune warned.

In this context, President Tebboune highlighted Algeria’s 50-year struggle to address global inequities and advocated for a pragmatic and radical approach to resolve crises definitively. He called for a renewed commitment from the international community to seek lasting solutions to conflicts and address them with urgency.

President Tebboune’s address before the UN General Assembly emphasized Algeria’ steadfast dedication to just causes and its unwavering support for the Palestinian people. The call for an extraordinary General Assembly session and his impassioned plea for global action underscored the nation’s commitment to peace, justice, and the pursuit of a more equitable world order.
