Algiers- Algeria, May 5, 2024 –  During this season, bluefin tuna is beginning to appear at ports and fishmongers’ stalls, gradually becoming more widely available on the market as fishing operations increase. While it becomes abundant in Algerian and Mediterranean waters from now until mid-July, this highly nutritious fish is currently being sold to customers at prices that may not be accessible to all citizens. Presently, the price per kilogram is 1800 Algerian Dinars (DA) in Zemmouri (Boumerdès) and 1700 DA at the port of Bouharoun (Tipaza), resulting in a relatively modest turnout. However, fishermen in Bou-Ismaïl anticipate that prices will decrease in the coming days, potentially reaching as low as 1200 and 1100 DA per kilogram.

A fisherman commented, “These initial quantities available in the market naturally come at a higher price per kilo for customers. However, this situation is temporary. The official fishing campaign is scheduled to commence during the last week of May. Bluefin tuna prices will likely improve, allowing all citizens to purchase it. At least, that’s our hope.” According to information from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Production, the fishing campaign is set to start on May 26th, led by the sector’s top official, Ahmed Badani.

Algeria’s Quota Increased by 23 tons

This year, Algeria’s quota for bluefin tuna has seen a slight increase. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has allocated Algeria a quota of 2046 tons for bluefin tuna. This decision was made during a meeting of the ICCAT’s 2nd sub-commission in Madrid, Spain, with the participation of Amar Ouchelli, the Deputy Director of Large-Scale Fisheries and Specialized Fisheries at the Ministry.

The meeting saw “the approval of Algeria’s fishing plan for the year 2024, which includes the addition of 5 more vessels to the bluefin tuna fishing fleet and an adjustment of Algeria’s quota, with an additional 23 tons to compensate for 2023, bringing the total national quota volume to 2046 tons for the year 2024,” as announced by the ministry. The fleet participating in the bluefin tuna fishing campaign will also be expanded. While 32 purse seiners had set out from various coastal cities to recover Algeria’s quota, five new vessels will strengthen this fleet in an effort to ensure success in this operation.
