ALGIERS- Prince Hisham Al-Aaoui has disclosed that he advised King Mohammed VI to transform Morocco into a modern state, replacing the Makhzen system with a constitutional monarchy. This would have allowed for the consolidation of popular sovereignty and the separation of powers, leading to a more democratic and progressive society.

In an interview with France 24, Prince Hisham Al-Aaoui revealed that his advice was rejected by the Makhzen regime, which also refused to open up to the opposition and change its approach towards the military elite. It is unfortunate that Prince Hisham Al-Aaoui’s advice was not heeded, as it could have paved the way for a more modern and democratic Morocco.

In his book, “Diaries of an Outcast Prince,” Prince Hisham Al-Aaoui also criticized King Mohammed VI for failing to fulfill his promises despite being called the “Prince of the Poor.” He likened this title to that of the “Lazy King” used for the kings of France, which he believed was a sign of bad governance to come.

Hisham Al-Alaoui has brought to light the central theme of his book, “Diaries of an Outcast Prince,” which delves into the interpretation of the Moroccan state’ structure. The state is based on two fundamental structures: the traditional Makhzen system and modern institutions, economy, and infrastructure. This duality of government in Morocco means that the modern state coexists with traditional authority and serves it.

Al-Alaoui emphasizes that this duality in the government system poses a significant obstacle to Morocco’s future and jeopardizes the monarchy’s future. He notes that his efforts to bring about change within the government system have met with strong opposition. Conservative ideological resistance among some of the old guard and practical resistance from stakeholders constitute the most significant barriers to the transition towards democracy.

The Emir has shed light on a matter that is closely related to the interests of powerful lobbies that control significant portions of the Moroccan economy.

Furthermore, Prince Moulay Hisham has shared his experience of being refused by those close to the king when he offered his advice. He expressed his belief that the palace was an entity that would seek revenge on him and that its guards would force him to leave. As expected, this is precisely what happened. Despite this, he attended the pledge ceremony in modern attire, demonstrating that he had no ulterior motives other than to convey his message to the king.

Prince Hisham has fulfilled his familial and patriotic duties, and he remained steadfast in his position when he was told to stay in his place. Despite facing resistance and strong rejection, he remained resolute in his convictions.
