Priority to the Implementation of President Tebboune’s Program, Merad Says

Algiers, Algeria | November 13th, 2024 — On Wednesday, Brahim Merad installed Saïd Khalil as the new wali (governor) of Tiaret, emphasizing that the governors affected by the recent reshuffle initiated by the President of the Republic must align themselves with his program.

Regarding the priority given by the President of the Republic to the region, the Interior Minister highlighted the government’s swift response to the concerns of Tiaret’s citizens. He noted the substantial program allocated to the region, which is already showing visible results, particularly in terms of improving access to potable water. The minister stressed that this service would further improve with the completion of ongoing hydraulic projects.

Rapid Implementation of Socioeconomic Recovery Programs in Underserved Areas

Merad also pointed out that the President is particularly focused on water supply projects in regions facing difficulties. He commended the effective utilization of available financial resources to accelerate the implementation of the socioeconomic recovery program aimed at underserved areas, often referred to as “zones d’ombre” (shadow zones).

This move in Tiaret, Merad explained, seeks to boost the region’s development status and consolidate the achievements made by the previous wali. The focus is on enhancing fieldwork and maintaining a strong connection with the citizens. He reassured that the new wali has the necessary skills to push forward local projects.

Addressing Food Security Challenges

Merad emphasized the need to continue registering projects that benefit citizens in rural and village areas under ordinary development programs. He called for increased efforts to tackle the challenge of food security by expanding cultivated areas, improving the profitability of the agricultural sector, mastering production levels, and supporting investors in strategic agricultural sectors.

After the installation of Djilali Doumi as the new wali of Médéa on Tuesday evening, Merad praised the significant progress the region had made in improving development indicators, thanks to the efforts of local authorities and other regional partners.

Being Close to Citizens

Merad reminded everyone that the ongoing socioeconomic recovery efforts have significantly improved the living conditions of citizens. He stressed that such commitments should continue across all regions, particularly with the completion of major infrastructure projects, such as the modernization of the road network, which have opened up many economic opportunities.

He reiterated the importance of being close to the citizens, who have every right to point out the development shortcomings that local authorities should address. The minister also emphasized the importance of being attentive to citizens’ concerns and involving them in defining the goals for local development.

Ongoing Support for Governors

Merad also reaffirmed the Ministry of Interior’s commitment to supporting governors and reinforcing local public action. He stressed that all officials must visibly intensify their efforts to help the President fulfill his commitments for his second term.

Furthermore, Merad highlighted the expansion and modernization of the railway network as a major project that the President is relying on to achieve a qualitative leap in socioeconomic development. He concluded by announcing the upcoming commissioning of five seawater desalination stations, which will improve access to this vital resource.
