Algiers, Algeria | June 23rd, 2024 — The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, linking Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria, continues to advance significantly, contrasting with the conceptual stage of Morocco’s transatlantic gas pipeline project.

Nigerian Section Progress

Recently, Mele Kyari, the CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), announced that the largest Nigerian segment of the pipeline project, the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) line spanning 614 km, is set to be completed by the first quarter of 2025 at the latest. The pipeline’s arrival in Kano marks the completion of the Nigerian part of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, as Kano is near the Nigerian-Nigerien border. According to Nigerian Energy Minister Yusuf Maitama, Kano’s proximity to Niger makes it a strategic point for extending the pipeline further north towards Niger and Algeria.

Strategic Importance

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is recognized by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) as crucial for the future of the gas industry in Africa and its positioning in the international market. The AKK segment is highlighted by NNPC’s CEO as one of the key ongoing gas projects in Nigeria. Its objectives include connecting industrial states in northern Nigeria to gas supplies from the southeast and exporting surplus gas to Europe via the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP), spanning a total of 4,128 km.

Project Scope and Benefits

The pipeline will link gas fields in Nigeria starting from Warri, passing through Niger to the Algerian border, integrating into Algeria’s gas network. It aims to transport Nigeria’s gas production of 30 billion cubic meters, primarily targeting European markets. Additionally, the pipeline will supply gas to regions in northern Nigeria, northeast Nigeria, central Nigeria, and the Sahel countries along its route.

Impact on Other Projects

The accelerated progress of the Nigerian segment and the emergence of Senegal as a new gas-producing country in West Africa signal challenges for Morocco’s transatlantic gas pipeline project. This project has struggled to materialize on the ground due to substantial investment requirements and questioned profitability.

Strategic Alignment

Nigeria’s decision to prioritize the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline underscores its strategic alignment with Algeria in the gas sector. Leveraging existing infrastructure through Algeria offers logistical and economic advantages for exporting substantial gas volumes to Europe.

The advancements in the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project represent a significant step towards enhancing regional energy security and bolstering Africa’s role in global gas markets. Nigeria’s strategic choices highlight its commitment to regional cooperation and economic development through energy infrastructure projects.
