Algiers, Algeria | May 17, 2024 — During a meeting held at the headquarters of the Annaba Province, Abdelkader Djellaoui, the Wali of Annaba, extended a warm welcome to a delegation from the Marseille Municipal Council, led by Mayor Benoît Payan. Djellaoui emphasized the promising avenues for cooperation and partnership spanning various sectors between the two cities.
In outlining potential areas of collaboration between Annaba and Marseille, Djellaoui highlighted the significance of green transition, digital economy initiatives, port logistics enhancement, tourism investment ventures, and cultural exchanges.
He underscored the potential for fruitful cooperation between the University of Annaba and the University of Marseille, as well as between Annaba’s renowned “Hippone” Museum and the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MUCEM), reflecting a shared commitment to showcasing the richness of cultural and historical heritage.
Djellaoui encouraged Marseille-based enterprises to explore investment opportunities available in Annaba, noting the favorable conditions and support from national authorities for foreign companies seeking to invest in Algeria.
Prior to this meeting, Djellaoui had highlighted the economic strengths of the Annaba region, spanning from agriculture to industry, which offer significant economic and touristic prospects.
Furthermore, Djellaoui expressed Annaba’s keen interest in leveraging Marseille’s recognized expertise in urban development and rehabilitation to further enhance the city’s infrastructure and living conditions.
In response, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan affirmed the Marseille Municipal Council’s eagerness to establish robust cooperation and partnerships across various sectors with the coastal Algerian city.
Acknowledging Algeria’s status as an economic powerhouse with vast potential, Payan stressed the importance of solid cooperation in serving common objectives and interests, particularly in addressing contemporary multidimensional challenges, including environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and overall developmental progress.
During their visit, the delegation had the opportunity to explore key sites in Annaba, including the Revolution Square, before proceeding to Seraïdi commune atop the Edough mountain. The delegation also toured Annaba’s waterfront to gain insights into its tourist attractions and investment opportunities.
