Algiers, Algeria | May 23, 2024 — On Thursday, Minister of Energy Mohamed Arkab announced that ongoing studies on offshore hydrocarbon exploration in Algeria have yielded promising indicators, particularly for natural gas reserves.
In a plenary session at the Council of the Nation, Minister Arkab shared the preliminary findings, stating, “Studies conducted in two regions, the first between Skikda and Bejaia and the second between Ain Temouchent and Tlemcen, have revealed positive indicators reflecting significant natural gas reserves in these crucial sites.”
Exploration Programs and Future Plans
The minister emphasized that offshore hydrocarbon exploration is integral to the government’s comprehensive strategy to develop the mining, petroleum, and gas sectors. “We are currently evaluating the best exploration techniques,” Arkab explained. “Once all conditions are met, we will initiate the exploration phase.”
Current Exploration Status
Minister Arkab highlighted that only 47% of the national mining domain has been explored, encompassing the northern regions, the High Plateaus, and the southern areas of the country. “We still have considerable ground to cover, especially with offshore exploration given the significant and reliable indicators we have,” he added.
