ALGIERS- The opening of a KFC restaurant in Algeria has ignited intense anger due to the American chain’s support for the Zionist occupation. Citizens organized protests calling for the closure of the restaurant, warning that patronizing it would amount to complicity in the aggression against Gaza.
While the owners of the new restaurant, located in the upscale area of Dely Ibrahim in the Algerian capital, anticipated a high turnout due to the brand’s popularity and absence in the country, many Algerians had a contrasting reaction. They not only boycotted the establishment but also organized protests outside the building, condemning its opening at this time as an affront to its owners.

Algerians, especially when it comes to Palestine, do not mince words. Protesters carried banners with strong criticism, including phrases like “You’ve humiliated us, don’t even think about it,” and “Your cause is more important than your stomach, don’t buy.” They also chanted powerful slogans, such as “Shame, shame, they sold Gaza for money” and “KFC out, Algeria free.”
The restaurant, which had been talked about for about two years, officially opened on April 14th, occupying an area of approximately 400 square meters. Some activists took a different approach, warning Algerians about the exorbitant prices of KFC meals, which cost around 5000 Algerian dinars, equivalent to $30, a significant amount for a fast-food meal. Others expressed their rejection of the restaurant because it represents unhealthy eating habits at a time when Algerians enjoy a rich and diverse Mediterranean-style diet.

It’s noteworthy that Algeria has long refrained from allowing fast-food chains to operate on its soil. It is one of the few countries in the world where McDonald’s, Burger King, and other famous brands are absent.
The boycott campaign has gained strong traction among Algerians since the start of the Zionist aggression on Gaza, focusing on specific products, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, and dairy products like Danone. Some of these brands have been compelled, under pressure from the boycott campaigns, to offer tempting promotions during Ramadan to persuade Algerians to resume consumption.
