Algiers, Algeria | September 4th, 2024 — On Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure announced the establishment of a Maritime Construction Group (Groupe de Travaux Maritimes, or GTM), aimed at advancing the nation’s maritime infrastructure and executing the planned projects. This move is seen as a significant step towards bolstering Algeria’s maritime capabilities and meeting the growing demands of the national economy.
The inaugural General Assembly of the GTM took place on Tuesday, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Lakhdar Rakhroukh. The assembly was attended by representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, and Transport. The creation of this Group stems from the decisions made during the Council of Ministers’ meeting on July 15, which called for the establishment of a specialized Algerian company for major maritime works. It also aligns with the directives issued by the Council of State Participations (CPE) during its 187th session on August 5.
Minister Rakhroukh emphasized the strategic importance for Algeria to have a dedicated group focused on the construction of maritime installations. He highlighted that the newly formed GTM would significantly enhance the national construction sector’s capabilities, enabling it to compete with global players. This competitive edge is expected to allow GTM to secure major structural projects, further contributing to the country’s infrastructure development.
The Minister also underscored the necessity of fostering strong cooperation among the various stakeholders within the Group. Such collaboration is vital to maximizing the GTM’s role in advancing the nation’s maritime infrastructure and optimizing its performance. By doing so, the GTM is poised to play a crucial role in supporting the dynamic growth of Algeria’s economy.
According to the ministry’s statement, the GTM will serve as an effective tool for implementing the planned investments in maritime infrastructure. These investments are essential to keep pace with the economic momentum Algeria is currently experiencing. The GTM’s objectives include not only creating jobs and responding to the needs of the national economy but also elevating the quality of services provided to meet international standards.
This initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to enhancing its maritime infrastructure, which is a critical component of its broader economic development strategy. The creation of the GTM marks a pivotal step in ensuring that the country’s maritime facilities are equipped to support and sustain the nation’s economic ambitions.
