Algiers, Algeria | October 23rd, 2024 — In a recent declaration to Dzair Tube, Mohammed bin Hassan Al Malki, Undersecretary of Qatar’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, spoke enthusiastically about the expanding economic cooperation between Qatar and Algeria. His remarks came during the Algerian-Qatari Business Forum, which runs parallel to the Algerian Products Exhibition in Doha, highlighting both countries’ commitment to deepening their strategic partnership.
Mr. Al Malki expressed his gratitude to Algeria’s Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, for his inspirational address, affirming that the partnership between Qatar and Algeria is driven by the political will of their respective leaderships. The frequent bilateral meetings and collaborative initiatives underscore the strong desire to enhance the framework of economic cooperation between the two nations. “The political will is clear,” Mr. Al Malki stated, “and today, Qatari investments in Algeria are well-established, laying the groundwork for new opportunities.”
He praised the presence of Algerian companies at the exhibition in Qatar, showcasing a wide array of products and further strengthening the economic collaboration between the private sectors of both countries. This, he said, reflects the critical role that the private sector plays in supporting economic integration. He also pointed to the presence of Qatari private sector representatives as an indication of the growing Algerian-Qatari synergy, which is pivotal to boosting trade and investment frameworks.
Mr. Al Malki further elaborated on the immense opportunities available in Algeria, which he described as a “fertile ground for foreign investments,” citing the testimonials of numerous investors from both Qatar and beyond. He acknowledged the significant praise for the Algerian government’s facilitation measures aimed at foreign investors, which have contributed to the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination.
When discussing the next phase of Qatari investment in Algeria, Mr. Al Malki highlighted sectors that have already seen significant Qatari involvement, such as hospitality and healthcare, and mentioned that dairy production is also being explored. He emphasized that Algeria’s Export Promotion Agency has identified key sectors for growth, offering vast opportunities for foreign investors. “The sectors that Algeria is targeting are clear, and the presence of the Agency today in Qatar will facilitate the private sector’s choice of key areas for investment,” he explained.
Mr. Al Malki stressed that while the government has established the regulatory framework and facilitated trade exchanges, the ball is now in the private sector’s court to seize the existing opportunities. “We have laid the foundation, but it’s up to the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and the business community to take the next step. The political will is there, the mechanisms for cooperation are in place, and all frameworks are available.”
Looking forward, Mr. Al Malki outlined the future goal of expanding Qatari investments in Algeria and increasing the volume of bilateral trade. He noted that while Qatar’s exports to Algeria have been substantial, there is a clear desire to foster mutual exchange, enhancing Algeria’s export presence in Qatar. “The groundwork has been laid, the sectors are identified, and now we expect the private sector to act swiftly and efficiently,” he concluded, expressing optimism about the potential for greater economic integration between the two nations.
This strong show of commitment and ambition from Qatar’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as articulated by Mr. Al Malki, signals a promising future for Algerian-Qatari economic relations, with both countries poised to benefit from a deepened partnership that spans multiple sectors.
