ALGIERS- The 7th summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) concluded on Saturday in Algiers, following three days of crucial discussions regarding the role of natural gas in global energy transition. The notable presence of the Emir of Qatar and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran underscored the unwavering commitment of these two giants to contribute to the achievement of the summit’s objectives.
Represented by Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and President Ebrahim Raïssi, respectively, Qatar and Iran conveyed a strong message emphasizing their commitment to realizing the Algiers Declaration. This declaration aims to align positions, amidst turbulent international conditions, and to strengthen unity within the forum, representing nearly 70% of the world’s natural gas reserves.
The presence of these two leaders at the 7th GECF summit also demonstrated the determined efforts of both nations, at the highest level, to maintain market stability and mitigate disruptions arising from international conflicts. This commitment was echoed in statements by Qatari officials, reaffirming their unwavering support for the growth of the gas market. Possessing the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves, totaling 24.7 trillion cubic meters, or 13% of global reserves, Qatar undoubtedly represents a major player with which to contend in the future, particularly amidst the reconfiguration of the global gas market in the face of ongoing upheavals. Another country poised to play a significant role in the future is Iran.
Also represented at the GECF summit by its highest authority, President Ebrahim Raïssi utilized the opportunity to encourage member countries to exchange expertise in the gas industry and gas transportation, as well as to intensify cooperation to address energy challenges amidst evolving geopolitical developments and conflicts.
Bilateral Meeting
This matter was undoubtedly discussed during a bilateral meeting between the Iranian president and the Emir of Qatar on the sidelines of the summit on Saturday. According to a statement from the official Qatari news agency, the two parties discussed, among other subjects, cooperation in the gas sector, as both nations share the North Field offshore gas field, the world’s largest natural gas reservoir. Additionally, the two leaders discussed means to strengthen bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.
In the broader context of the 7th GECF summit, both countries expressed their commitment to making the forum an effective mechanism for cooperation. This commitment was reaffirmed in the final declaration, highlighting its crucial role in coordinating the energy policies of member countries in light of new dynamics in the global gas market. These upheavals necessitate alignment among major sector players such as Russia, Qatar, and Iran, as well as other forum members.
The participation of the Emir of Qatar and the Iranian president reflects their determined willingness to actively shape the future of this crucial market amidst global energy transition. The GECF, representing nearly 70% of the world’s natural gas reserves, stands as an indispensable actor aspiring to stabilize market fluctuations and mitigate the impacts of geopolitical tensions in an ever-changing world.
