Algiers, Algeria | September 1st, 2024 — In a transformative move for Algeria’s commercial sector, Tayeb Zitouni, the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, has unveiled plans to attract substantial investments from Qatari and mixed foreign companies in the areas of large-scale commercial spaces, shopping centers, and distribution hubs. This initiative aims to establish approximately 500 new retail branches across the nation, with an anticipated creation of over 10,000 job opportunities.
Minister Zitouni’s announcement was made during a ceremony marking the launch of recycled paper bag exports to three Arab markets. The event, which also featured the official opening of the “4Weeks” retail store, was attended by Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA), and Issam Badrissi, Secretary-General of the General Union of Algerian Merchants and Artisans.
Zitouni highlighted that this influx of investment is a critical component of Algeria’s strategy to fortify its retail sector. He stated, “Our objective is to utilize this phase of the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion’s strategy to thoroughly restructure and organize the market. This encompasses establishing robust legal frameworks, enhancing electronic payment systems, optimizing distribution plans, and regulating wholesale markets and commercial spaces.”
In addition, the Minister underscored the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially those engaged in recycling and upcycling. He encouraged these businesses to seize opportunities in paper bag production, emphasizing that this initiative will facilitate their growth and access to international markets.
Zitouni reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to supporting local producers and helping them penetrate new markets. He pointed out that the current shipment represents just the beginning of a series of exports aimed at further integrating Algerian products into global trade networks.
This development not only marks a significant advancement for Algeria’s retail sector but also bolsters the country’s standing as an emerging hub for international investment and economic expansion.
