Algiers, Algeria | October 23rd, 2024 — Mohammed bin Hassan Al Malki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, outlined an ambitious roadmap for deepening economic cooperation between Qatar and Algeria in a declaration with Dzair Tube. His remarks came during the Algerian-Qatari Business Forum, held in parallel with the Algerian Products Exhibition in Doha, underscoring both nations’ strong political will to strengthen their strategic partnership.

“We thank His Excellency, the Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, for his inspiring words,” Al Malki began, referencing the keynote speech delivered at the forum, which set the tone for discussions focused on further integrating the economic and trade frameworks between the two countries. He noted that the high-level bilateral meetings and repeated joint cooperation efforts demonstrate a clear political desire to enhance economic ties between Qatar and Algeria.

Al Malki went on to highlight the increasing presence of Qatari investments in Algeria, pointing to several key sectors where Qatar has already established a foothold. “Qatari investments in Algeria are visible, and, as His Excellency pointed out, they have laid the groundwork for new opportunities. The participation of Algerian companies in Qatar today, showcasing their products, is a testament to this growing cooperation,” he explained.

The Undersecretary also emphasized the significant role of Qatar’s private sector in the forum, describing their involvement as crucial for unlocking the full potential of Qatari-Algerian economic relations. He highlighted the vast opportunities that exist between the two nations, saying, “Qatar and Algeria are at the beginning of a promising partnership. We expect this initial phase to expand, creating even greater opportunities for investment and trade exchanges. This cooperation can serve as an exemplary model for other Arab countries.”

Al Malki praised Algeria’s reputation as a fertile ground for foreign investments, a sentiment echoed by both Qatari and international investors. He noted that many investors have expressed strong satisfaction with the facilitation efforts provided by the Algerian government, which has actively created a welcoming environment for foreign capital. “As Qatari investors, we are keen to understand which sectors will be targeted in the coming phases, particularly since we have already invested in hospitality, healthcare, and dairy industries,” Al Malki continued.

He acknowledged the pivotal role of the Algerian Export Promotion Agency (ALGEX), which has identified key sectors for future development. Al Malki emphasized the strategic importance of these sectors for the private sector, stressing that “the general regulatory frameworks, trade facilitation efforts, and organizational rules are already in place, making it easier for private companies to move forward.”

Turning to the broader objectives of the forum, Al Malki underscored the shared vision of increasing bilateral trade between Qatar and Algeria by a remarkable 100 percent. He pointed to the strong political will and institutional mechanisms established to realize this ambitious target. “We have set the stage; now the ball is in the court of the Qatari Chamber of Commerce and private sector leaders. The opportunities are there, the political will is present, and the frameworks for cooperation have been facilitated. Our future goal is to enhance Qatari investment packages in Algeria and increase the volume of trade between the two nations by 100 percent,” he declared.

Al Malki further explained that while trade from Qatar to Algeria has reached significant levels, there is a strong desire to see more Algerian products in the Qatari market. “Our trade from Qatar to Algeria is high, but we aim to increase bilateral trade by encouraging more exports from Algeria to Qatar. With the foundations already laid and sectors identified, we expect the private sector to move more quickly and efficiently in achieving this goal.”

In closing, Al Malki reiterated Qatar’s commitment to strengthening the economic relationship with Algeria, stating that both nations are poised to benefit from greater integration in various sectors. His vision for the future sees Qatar and Algeria as leading examples of successful economic cooperation within the Arab world, propelled by mutual investments and strategic partnerships that promise significant growth and shared prosperity.
