Algiers, Algeria | November 10th, 2024 — Rachid Mekhloufi, the moudjahid and former member of the FLN national football team, was laid to rest on Sunday at Algiers’ El Alia Cemetery following the Dohr prayer. Mekhloufi, who passed away on Friday at the age of 88, was honored by a large gathering of dignitaries, sports figures, and citizens, all of whom came to pay their respects to a man whose legacy spanned both the battle for Algeria’s independence and its sporting history.

The funeral ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, several government officials, family members, fellow fighters, football club presidents, athletes, and a crowd of citizens, all united in mourning the loss of a national hero. His passing marks the end of an era for both Algeria’s revolutionary struggle and its footballing heritage.

During the ceremony, the Minister of Mujahideen and the Rights Holders, Laïd Rebiga, delivered an emotional eulogy, recalling Mekhloufi’s remarkable contributions both as a fighter for Algeria’s independence and as a symbol of athletic excellence. Rebiga emphasized that Mekhloufi was part of “the blessed generation of moudjahidine” who had the honor of fighting for national freedom, playing a crucial role in writing the history of Algeria’s liberation.

Rebiga further praised Mekhloufi’s unwavering patriotism and dedication, noting that even after Algeria gained independence, the former footballer continued to serve his country through sport, dedicating his life to training future generations and nurturing the Algerian spirit of perseverance and love for the homeland. His contributions, not only on the football field but also in positions of high responsibility, showcased his deep commitment to advancing Algeria’s development and preserving the legacy of the brave martyrs of the revolution.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously expressed his heartfelt condolences to Mekhloufi’s family, recognizing the loss of a monumental figure in the country’s history.

Rachid Mekhloufi’s passing leaves a void in the heart of Algeria, but his extraordinary life of service, both as a fighter for independence and as a pioneer in Algerian football, will continue to inspire future generations. His name remains etched in the nation’s history, symbolizing a legacy of courage, dedication, and unwavering patriotism.
