Algiers, Algeria | May 29, 2024 — Algeria’s permanent mission to the United Nations submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council on Tuesday evening, demanding that the Zionist entity immediately cease its military offensive in Rafah, according to reports from the Algerian Press Service (APS) on Wednesday.

Following an emergency Security Council meeting held the previous evening, the Algerian draft resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire to be respected by all parties and condemns the indiscriminate attacks on civilians, including women and children, and on civilian infrastructure.

The resolution underscores the obligation of all parties to adhere to international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights law, particularly concerning the protection of civilians and civilian properties. It also stresses the urgent need to halt the deprivation of essential services and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian civilian population in the Gaza Strip, which are crucial for their survival.

Dire Humanitarian Crisis and Widespread Famine

The draft resolution expresses grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, highlighting widespread famine and deteriorating living conditions. It underscores the suffering of the Palestinian civilian population, including those who have sought refuge in Rafah, many of whom have been forcibly displaced.

This resolution comes in response to the brutal and unjustifiable aggression by Zionist occupation forces against a Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah, which resulted in the death of over 45 individuals, including children, infants, and women. The attack also left many severely burned, requiring medical treatment that is now largely unavailable in Gaza due to the destruction of most of its healthcare facilities.

The draft resolution is expected to be put to a vote by Security Council members in the coming days, following the conclusion of a brief negotiation phase, given the urgency of the situation on the ground.

The Algerian initiative highlights the dire need for immediate international intervention to address the escalating violence and its devastating humanitarian impact on the Palestinian population in Gaza.
