Algiers, Algeria | January 03rd, 2024 — Algeria steps into 2025 with towering ambitions, its aspirations as high as the sky itself, echoing the resolute vision declared by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his address to the nation before Parliament at the close of 2024. These ambitions encapsulate the collective dreams of both the people and their leader: a progressive, secure, and prosperous Algeria emerging as a continental powerhouse by 2029.

President Tebboune’s bold objectives are grounded in solid milestones. Algeria aims to achieve African leadership by 2029 through groundbreaking reforms and transformational development across multiple sectors. Among the primary goals is the comprehensive digitization of all sectors, ultimately eradicating bureaucracy and corruption by transitioning to a fully paperless administration. This landmark decision, hailed as historic, promises to accelerate efficiency and transparency.

Agricultural self-sufficiency stands as another cornerstone of this vision. After securing self-sufficiency in durum wheat production, Algeria targets soft wheat self-reliance by 2029. Parallel efforts focus on achieving 75% milk production self-sufficiency, with a complete phase-out of milk powder imports by 2032, facilitated by strategic partnerships such as that with Qatar.

Strategic infrastructure development is central to Algeria’s ambitions. The railway network will be expanded to reach Adrar and Tamanrasset, while the colossal mines of Gara Djebilet, Tébessa’s phosphate reserves, and Béjaïa’s zinc mines are set to enter full operational capacity, boosting both domestic capacity and export potential.

A landmark energy transformation strategy underscores Algeria’s commitment to shifting from raw hydrocarbon exports to refined products, positioning the nation as a leading exporter of high-value energy goods to regional and global markets.

Housing development stands out as a monumental goal, with plans to construct and deliver 2 million residential units—a feat unparalleled in the Arab and African regions. This massive housing initiative reflects Algeria’s dedication to social welfare and urban modernization, aligning its cities with global architectural standards.

Economic diversification remains a key pillar of Algeria’s 2029 vision, with the goal of establishing globally competitive private enterprises such as Sider El Hadjar, Saterex, and Sidi Moussa. State-owned giants like Sonatrach and Sonelgaz are poised for regional market dominance, while the rise of promising startups, particularly in the tech sector, is being actively nurtured by the Ministry of Higher Education.

On the trade front, Algeria aspires to reach $29 billion in non-hydrocarbon exports by 2029, driven by a reinvigorated Ministry of Foreign Trade focused on enhancing global competitiveness. Additionally, the nation’s railway network will be expanded from its current 4,700 km to 10,000 km, further facilitating industrial and logistical connectivity.

The vision also emphasizes equitable urban development, with plans to establish four global-standard capitals: Algiers as the political and economic hub, Oran as a tourist and economic center, Constantine as a historical and cultural axis, and Tamanrasset as the gateway to the African continent.

Social reforms are equally pivotal. Algeria seeks to reduce unemployment to single digits, ensuring dignified employment opportunities for all. Public hospitals are being modernized to provide world-class medical care, emphasizing patient dignity and professional excellence. Furthermore, wage reforms aim to secure a dignified standard of living for all public and private sector employees, including educators, engineers, and healthcare professionals.

In education, Algeria’s reforms aim to produce globally competitive graduates, particularly in technology and innovation sectors, with projections indicating the creation of 10,000 to 15,000 innovative startups from universities by 2029. English is also poised to become the nation’s second language, aligning Algeria with global scientific and technological advancements.

Cultural and historical preservation remains a national priority, with plans for grand tributes to Algeria’s liberation heroes and the production of globally acclaimed films that honor the nation’s historical figures. A revitalized national media landscape is also a critical goal, with aspirations for an influential, professional media sector capable of both defending and promoting Algeria’s achievements with strategic acumen on the global stage.

In sports, Algeria aims to nurture national teams that can compete with global giants while transitioning towards financially self-sustaining clubs. Investments in quality infrastructure and anti-corruption measures in sports governance further demonstrate this commitment.

President Tebboune’s 2029 vision is not merely a governmental agenda but the embodiment of the people’s aspirations. It reflects a shared national determination where the dreams of the citizens mirror those of their president—bold, unwavering, and transformative. This collective ambition signals an Algeria prepared to take its rightful place among the world’s leading nations, rooted in progress, resilience, and unity.
