Algiers, Algeria | November 21st, 2024 —In a significant move reflecting Algeria’s unwavering commitment to energy transition, the recent government reshuffle has redefined the management of the country’s energy sector. Central to this restructuring is the integration of renewable energy and mining sectors under the Ministry of Energy and Mines, marking a shift toward greater efficiency and a robust push for sustainable development.

In an exclusive interview with the Washington-based Energy Platform, Rafik Chelghoum, Editor-in-Chief of Algeria Now, outlined the strategic importance of these changes. He emphasized that the new alignment enhances the government’s ability to meet its ambitious energy transition goals, including achieving 30% renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2035. Chelghoum underscored the need for harnessing Algeria’s abundant renewable resources, including solar and wind energy, to not only meet domestic demands but also position the country as a regional leader in clean energy production.

“This restructuring is far more than an administrative shift,” Chelghoum explained. “It reflects a focused vision to consolidate expertise and resources within a unified framework. This will enhance the coordination of projects such as the 15-gigawatt renewable energy program and initiatives in green hydrogen, ensuring efficiency and strategic alignment.”

The appointment of Professor Nourredine Yassaa as Secretary of State for Renewable Energies was particularly lauded. Yassaa, a distinguished expert with extensive international experience, previously served as the Director of the Center for Renewable Energy Development (CDER) and played a pivotal role in drafting global energy policies through his involvement with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His leadership is expected to accelerate Algeria’s efforts to establish itself as a producer and exporter of green hydrogen, leveraging the nation’s vast potential for clean energy generation.

Chelghoum noted, “Professor Yassaa’s proven expertise and his ability to foster innovation make him a cornerstone in Algeria’s energy transformation. His contributions to international climate discussions provide Algeria with a voice in shaping the future of global energy transitions.”

The inclusion of Karima Tafer as Secretary of State for Mines adds another dimension to the strategic focus on sustainability and resource optimization. With over three decades of experience in geology and resource management, Tafer is poised to advance key projects, including the Gara Djebilet iron ore project and the Integrated Phosphate Project, while introducing modern technologies such as remote sensing to enhance geological data precision.

“Tafer’s expertise ensures that Algeria’s rich mineral resources are developed responsibly and sustainably,” Chelghoum remarked. “Her leadership will contribute significantly to diversifying the economy while preserving environmental integrity.”

By streamlining renewable energy and mining sectors under one ministry, the government aims to avoid the fragmentation of efforts, optimize resource allocation, and achieve synergies that accelerate progress in meeting national objectives. Chelghoum highlighted the strategic impact of this decision, stating, “This unified structure strengthens Algeria’s ability to drive forward its energy transition strategy while attracting international investments and fostering innovation in renewable technologies.”

The new appointments also reflect Algeria’s broader vision of economic and environmental sustainability. The restructuring reinforces the government’s determination to transition away from dependency on fossil fuels, aligning with global energy trends and addressing climate change challenges.

Chelghoum concluded, “The government has laid a solid foundation for a transformative journey in Algeria’s energy and mining sectors. The expertise of leaders like Yassaa and Tafer assures that the country’s ambitious goals are in capable hands. These changes not only bolster Algeria’s standing as a regional power but also contribute significantly to the global pursuit of a greener, more sustainable future.”

As Algeria advances its energy transition agenda, the strategic integration of renewable energy and mining under unified leadership positions the nation at the forefront of innovation and sustainability, setting a precedent for other energy-rich nations striving for a cleaner future.
