Algiers, Algeria | February 28th, 2025 — The Sirius Astronomy Association has released a comprehensive statement detailing the astronomical data related to the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 1446 (2025). While emphasizing that only the Lunar Crescent Committee of the Ministry of Religious Affairs holds the authority to issue a formal fatwa regarding the official start of Ramadan, the association provided scientific insights into the lunar conjunction and its visibility across various regions.
According to precise astronomical calculations, the new moon will be born on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 01:45 local time. This coincides with what is traditionally known as the Night of Doubt (Laylat al-Shakk), which falls on the 29th of Sha’ban 1446 H and has been set by the Ministry of Religious Affairs for Friday, February 28. Crucially, since the moment of lunar conjunction precedes sunset and the moon will set after the sun, theoretical visibility of the crescent will be possible in Algeria under favorable meteorological conditions, though it will remain challenging to observe with the naked eye. Based on these astronomical parameters, it is anticipated that the first day of Ramadan will be officially declared for Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Globally, the crescent moon will be above the horizon at sunset across the Muslim world, but its altitude and visibility will vary significantly depending on geographical location. While regions in Africa and southwestern Europe may have a higher probability of naked-eye observation, Middle Eastern and Asian countries will require telescopic assistance to detect the crescent.
The Sirius Astronomy Association underscored that its findings align seamlessly with international astronomical institutions’ scientific data concerning lunar conjunction and crescent visibility. These calculations have been independently corroborated by observations from multiple research centers and astronomical observatories, including the International Crescent Observation Project (ICOP), a globally recognized authority in lunar crescent monitoring.
Reaffirming the importance of religious jurisdiction, the association reiterated that the sole entity authorized to issue a definitive ruling on the commencement of Ramadan remains the Crescent Moon Commission under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
As the Islamic world prepares for the sacred month, Sirius extends its best wishes, stating, “May this Ramadan bring peace, reflection, and spiritual fulfillment, and may our fasting and meritorious deeds be accepted by the Almighty Allah.”
