Algeria and Several Arab Nations Declare Saturday, March 1, as the First Day of the Holy Month
Algiers, Algeria | February 28th, 2025 — The sacred month of Ramadan 1446H will commence in Algeria on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the official sighting of the crescent moon, as announced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments. The announcement was made during the traditional Night of Doubt at Dar El-Imam Sidi Abderrahmane At-Thaâlibi in Algiers, where the National Crescent Sighting Committee convened to confirm the lunar observation. As a result, Tarawih prayers will begin in mosques across the country tonight, ushering in a period of intense devotion, discipline, and communal solidarity.
This decision aligns with the official declarations of several other Arab nations. The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia confirmed that Ramadan will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025, a decision echoed by the Ministries of Islamic Affairs in Qatar and Oman. The UAE’s Presidential Diwan has also validated the moon sighting, while other countries continue their lunar observations to determine the exact start of the fast.
Ramadan: A Month Beyond Fasting
More than a period of mere abstinence, Ramadan stands as the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, marking the divine revelation of the Holy Qur’an as a guiding light for humanity. It is a time when spiritual refinement, self-discipline, and acts of charity take precedence over worldly engagements, reinforcing the values of faith, patience, and empathy.
One of the five pillars of Islam, fasting from dawn to sunset is a fundamental obligation for Muslims during Ramadan. The Holy Quran states: “Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until nightfall.” (Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 187). This daily abstention from food, drink, and marital relations is not merely a physical challenge but a profound exercise in self-restraint, purification, and spiritual elevation, designed to draw believers closer to Almighty Allah.
A Time for Worship, Reflection, and Charity
Beyond the physical act of fasting, Ramadan is characterized by an intensified engagement in acts of worship. Tarawih prayers, performed nightly after Isha, offer an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the teachings of the Qur’an, which is recited in its entirety throughout the month. The holiest night of the year, Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), holds unparalleled significance, described in the Qur’an as “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr, Verse 3). It is a night of divine mercy, when prayers are accepted, destinies are decreed, and sins are forgiven.
Ramadan is also a time of immense generosity and compassion. The obligatory charity, Zakât al-Fitr, must be given before the Eid al-Fitr prayers to purify the fast and provide for those in need, ensuring that every member of society can partake in the celebrations. In addition to this obligatory act, Muslims are encouraged to increase their voluntary charity (Sadaqah) and engage in acts of kindness and service to the less fortunate.
A Universal Journey of Faith and Brotherhood
As Ramadan begins, Muslims across the world embark on an extraordinary spiritual journey, one that transcends borders and unites the global Muslim Ummah in faith and devotion. It is a month that fosters inner peace, fortifies communal bonds, and rekindles the fundamental values of Islam: humility, gratitude, and unwavering trust in God. In an era where challenges and divisions persist, Ramadan remains a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity, the solace in faith, and the transformative power of self-discipline and compassion.
With Algeria and other nations now stepping into this sacred month, millions prepare to immerse themselves in a deeply personal yet profoundly communal experience—one that will reshape hearts, strengthen faith, and inspire a renewed commitment to justice, mercy, and solidarity.
