ALGIERS-  As a relentless heatwave tightens its grip on Algeria, four wilayas in the country’s north have been placed under a red alert, indicating the highest level of vigilance, due to the scorching temperatures reaching a blistering 48°C. The affected wilayas, Tipaza, Algiers, Blida, and Boumerdes, are bracing for the sweltering conditions from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today.

According to the latest special weather report (BMS) issued by Météo Algérie, the ongoing heatwave is set to continue wreaking havoc across the majority of the country. Most wilayas will be placed on an orange alert, signaling significant risks, as temperatures soar between 43°C and 45°C. Some regions, particularly Biskra, El M’Ghair, and localities in the northern part of El Oued, could even witness the mercury rising to a scorching 49°C.

While the unbearable heatwave persists, a glimmer of hope arrives in the form of stormy rain showers. The wilayas of Bouira, Sétif, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Médéa, Djelfa, Tiaret, M’sila, Batna, and Khenchela are expected to experience these welcome downpours. However, caution must be exercised as these showers are likely to be accompanied by intense thunderstorms, potentially causing localized flooding and other weather-related hazards.

The yellow vigilance alert, denoting moderate risks, will be in effect from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The combination of extreme heat and thunderstorms poses a dual challenge for the affected regions, requiring individuals to adapt their behaviors to mitigate the risks.

The Algerian population, especially those residing in the impacted wilayas, are urged to take immediate actions to safeguard themselves and their communities. Authorities are recommending the following measures to combat the scorching heat and potential thunderstorms:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine and alcohol.

2. Seek Shelter: Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If possible, use air conditioning or fans to keep cool.

3. Dress Appropriately: Wear loose, light-colored clothing and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin.

4. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on elderly people, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

5. Be Prepared: Have an emergency kit ready, including essential supplies, such as food, water, medications, and first aid items. Stay informed about weather updates and heed official warnings.
