Algiers, Algeria | June 9th, 2024 — The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, engaged in crucial discussions with his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Musa Timothy Kabba, on Sunday. Kabba is visiting Algeria to attend the 11th Ministerial Meeting of the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government of the African Union (C10) on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform, slated for Monday. This visit underscores the ongoing efforts to promote a unified African stance on the reform of the UNSC.

The Meeting’s Purpose

During their meeting, Attaf and Kabba focused on essential organizational aspects of the upcoming C10 ministerial session. With Sierra Leone currently holding the rotating presidency of the C10, Kabba’s visit is pivotal in steering discussions toward achieving more equitable representation for Africa within the UNSC. The continent has long sought to rectify what it perceives as historical injustice in its underrepresentation in this key international body.

According to the official communiqué from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers reviewed several critical elements, including setting a robust agenda for the C10 meeting that highlights Africa’s priorities and strategies for UNSC reform. They emphasized the need for cohesive and strategic coordination among African states to present a unified front in international negotiations and discussed plans for diplomatic efforts to garner broader international support for Africa’s position on UNSC reform.

Background on the C10

The C10, a specialized committee within the African Union, is tasked with advocating for the continent’s interests in the ongoing global discourse on UNSC reform. The committee aims to secure permanent representation for African nations, reflecting the continent’s growing political and economic influence on the world stage.
