Algeria, known for its hospitality, ensured that the Moroccan team was provided with all necessary facilities upon their arrival, including a prayer room and an imam at the airport, considering that they landed during Friday prayers.
However, in a disappointing turn of events, the Berkane delegation responded to this hospitality with a political gesture, asserting that their visit was not solely for a football match.
Upon their arrival, the Berkane delegation wore jerseys featuring a map of Morocco, including the occupied Western Sahara—an act perceived as politically charged and distasteful.
It is noteworthy that the Berkane Club had never displayed such a map on their jerseys in any of their previous matches. Therefore, the sudden inclusion of this map raises questions about the underlying motives behind this decision.
The insistence on displaying the map by the Berkane Club, commonly associated with Makhzen, resulted in a violation of CAF regulations. Article 6 clearly stipulates that only authorized advertisements on jerseys are permitted, in accordance with the regulations of the host country.
As a consequence of this decision, the Renaissance Berkane players were subjected to delays at the airport and faced intervention from Algerian authorities, who enforced the removal of all jerseys bearing the controversial map. Subsequently, the Berkane delegation proceeded to their luxurious hotel, provided with all necessary amenities for their stay.
