Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2024 — The Renault factory (RAP) in Oued Tlélat is gearing up to resume operations, announced Ali Aoun on Thursday, urging Iris Tyres to prepare its products for Fiat, Renault—which will restart soon—and JAC vehicles.
During a visit to the Algiers International Fair, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun spent considerable time at the Iris Tyres booth, a leading Algerian manufacturer of tires. Aoun listened attentively as Djamel Guidoum, CEO of Iris Tyres, showcased the quality of their products, exported to the United States and various European countries, including England where they equip electric taxis. The minister encouraged Iris Tyres to integrate into the national automotive industry revival policy by supplying original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tires to local manufacturers.
Aoun specifically suggested that Iris Tyres engage with active or soon-to-be-active automakers such as Fiat, JAC, and Renault, assuring them that Renault’s operations would resume shortly. Guidoum responded positively, noting that one product had already been approved for Fiat’s Doblo, with another for the Fiat 500 currently undergoing homologation.
Just days ago, indications of Renault’s return surfaced following a meeting between the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production and the French ambassador. Discussions centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors, reflecting mutual interests and exploring avenues for further development.
Factory Compliance Efforts
This meeting followed closely on the heels of statements by RAP’s General Director confirming Renault’s readiness to restart operations after significant investments to align with updated regulations (Executive Decree 22-384 of November 17, 2022). This decree outlines conditions for manufacturing tourism and light utility vehicles, along with pertinent specifications.
Renault Algeria Production, a joint venture involving Renault, Madar Holding, and the National Investment Fund (FNI), has invested approximately 15 billion Algerian dinars to prepare the Oued Tlélat plant for compliance and operational readiness.
Originally inaugurated in November 2014, the RAP facility halted operations in 2020 due to the suspension of SKD-CKD kit imports. It has since been undergoing updates to meet the new automotive industry standards.
Renault’s commitment to restarting operations in Algeria reflects ongoing efforts to bolster the local automotive sector and contribute to economic revitalization.
