Renowned Algerian Journalist and Author, Rafik Mohoub, Unveils Historical Saga in His Latest Novel ‘The Dream of the Dead’

ALGIERS- Renowned Algerian journalist and the General Manager of ‘The Other Voice’ daily newspaper, Rafik Mohoub, made a significant appearance at ‘Sila’ International Book Fair with his latest novel, “The Dream of the Dead,” published by Master Publishing and Distribution in the Arab Republic of Egypt. This historical novel delves into a crucial period in Algeria’s history, offering a captivating narrative of the past.
In an exclusive interview with Dzair Tube, Rafik Mohoub shared insights into the content of his novel, explaining that it chronicles the life of a figure known as “Ali the Washer” during the years 1808 to 1809. Ali was tasked with the grim responsibility of washing the deceased within the palace. Unbeknownst to him, his fate was intricately tied to the future of Algeria, becoming one of its Days. Intriguingly, the janissaries made a pact that whoever entered the palace would become the ruler of Algeria, a position that often led to execution.
“The Dream of the Dead” is not merely a historical account but also an intriguing exploration of France’s colonial ambitions in Algeria. Mohoub revealed that France had dispatched spies, including an operative named Botan, who provided military intelligence and detailed maps for potential invasion routes into Algeria. Furthermore, Botan advised Napoléon to enter via Sidi-Fredj, thus unraveling a significant aspect of the novel’s plot.
The novel also sheds light on the Jewish influence in Algeria during this period. It highlights the alliances formed between Botan, Napoléon, and the Bacri and Bouchnak brothers, who were instrumental in funding Botan’s clandestine activities. This intricate web of relationships adds depth and complexity to the story, revealing the multifaceted dynamics at play during this pivotal era.
