Johannesburg, August 22, 2023 – In a bid to foster closer ties with its diaspora and engage in pivotal global economic discussions, Algeria’s Finance Minister, Aziz Faid, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Johannesburg, South Africa. Serving as the representative of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Minister Faid’s visit aligns with the upcoming “BRICS Outreach Plus” forum, scheduled to convene from August 22 to August 24. This forum is a precursor to the 15th session of the BRICS summit, focusing on “Partnership for Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Comprehensive Multilateralism.”
The summit, which begins today, aims to foster cooperation among 67 countries spanning Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean, along with key international and regional organizations. High-ranking officials are poised to delve into discussions that touch upon the recovery from multidimensional crises, equitable multilateralism, and the reform of global governance.
In a press release by the Ministry of Finance, Algeria’s participation is underscored as a testament to the nation’s commitment to addressing critical issues such as global economic recovery, sustainable development, and climate transition. Minister Faid is expected to engage in fruitful dialogues with both BRICS member and non-member countries, further solidifying Algeria’s position in the global arena.
A prominent focal point of these discussions is Algeria’s aspiration to join the BRICS, a consortium responsible for a quarter of the world’s wealth and advocating for a balanced global economic and political equilibrium. The official request to join the BRICS Bank, backed by a substantial contribution of 1.5 billion dollars, is a stride toward a more inclusive world order.
Algeria’s pursuit of membership aligns with the aspirations of various nations including Iran, Argentina, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia. The possibility of expansion resonates with the BRICS’ vision of broadening its influence, a notion South African President Cyril Ramaphosa readily endorses. “South Africa supports the expansion of BRICS membership,” emphasized President Ramaphosa, reflecting the group’s commitment to a more balanced global landscape.
President Ramaphosa’ sentiment was echoed as he stressed South Africa’s policy of non-alignment, eschewing affiliations with dominant world powers or influential blocs. In an address broadcast nationwide, he underscored South Africa’s steadfast stance in the pursuit of a harmonious global order.
As the BRICS summit unfolds against the backdrop of South Africa’s vibrant city, Johannesburg, the diplomatic overture led by Finance Minister Aziz Faid serves as a resounding testament to Algeria’s dedication to international cooperation, sustainable development, and an equitable global economic framework.
