Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonatrach, visited the El Hamma seawater desalination plant in Algiers on Wednesday to oversee the recovery efforts following a fire that temporarily halted operations the previous day. The incident, which occurred in the electrical cell room, prompted immediate attention from both Hachichi and Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab, who were on-site to assess the fire’s impact and evaluate the initial response measures.
Technical teams from the El Hamma Desalination Company quickly mobilized to repair the damage caused by the fire. By early Wednesday morning, these intervention and maintenance teams successfully restored the plant to partial operations, achieving 50% of its production capacity, which ensured a continued water supply.
During his visit, Hachichi stressed the importance of safety and encouraged all personnel to work diligently towards restoring the plant’s full operational capacity. He emphasized the need to ensure normal water supply levels for the surrounding communities.
To expedite the complete restart of the El Hamma desalination plant, Sonatrach has mobilized all available human and material resources. This includes engaging its operational structures involved in separation, liquefaction, refining, and petrochemicals, along with its subsidiaries to provide necessary technical and logistical support.
