This move comes amid rumors that Mohammed VI is avoiding returning to Morocco due to the scandal surrounding the Sahelian Escobar drug trafficking network.
The extensive global drug trafficking scandal involves over 200 high-ranking civilian and military officials from Morocco, including individuals close to the king such as Fouad Ali El Himma, Mohammed VI’s chief of staff, Yacine Mansouri, head of the Moroccan intelligence agency (DGED), and Abdellatif Hammouchi, head of Moroccan security and intelligence services. With the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) leading the investigation, the king fears the potential humiliation of facing federal interrogations if he returns to Morocco.
Sources say that Mohammed VI is currently occupied with his favorite pastimes, and when not engaged in private activities with the Azaitar brothers, he finds solace in overseeing the construction of his latest palace in Zanzibar. The project is said to be based on an ancient Arab palace acquired during the king’s 2016 visit to the Tanzanian archipelago.
Boasting a personal fortune exceeding six billion euros, acquired through the exploitation of the Moroccan and Sahrawi peoples, Mohammed VI already owns two magnificent palaces in France. Additionally, the king, known for his passion for luxury and vintage cars inherited from his father and grandfather, possesses a fleet of 500 high-end vehicles, requiring a dedicated team of over a hundred personnel for maintenance.
This extravagant and scandalous display of opulence is perceived by many as a brazen and reckless provocation against the suffering Moroccan population currently grappling with hunger. These excesses further fuel the already intense anger among Moroccan citizens, aggravated by the betrayal of the Palestinian cause by the Moroccan government, against the backdrop of the ongoing Gaza genocide and support to the Zionist occupation forces by the Moroccan authorities.
