Algiers, Algeria | June 7th, 2024 — The long-awaited reactivation of the railway line connecting Algiers and Tunis is drawing closer, as Algerian and Tunisian authorities intensify their efforts with a series of test runs to evaluate the feasibility of this historic connection. On Thursday, June 5, the National Company of Tunisian Railways (SNCFT) announced via its official Facebook page the successful execution of a test run between Annaba, Algeria, and Tunis, Tunisia’s capital. This trial journey, which did not carry passengers, included a delegation from the Algerian National Railway Transport Company (SNTF), led by Director General Adj Bouaouni. The delegation was welcomed at Ghar Dimaa station by their Tunisian counterparts, including SNCFT President and Director General Tawfik Boufaid.
The test run featured participation from several high-ranking Tunisian officials, such as the Governor of Djendouba, the Delegate of Ghar Dimaa, representatives from the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior, Tunisian customs, and various regional and local authorities. This high-profile engagement underscores the project’s importance and its potential impact on both nations. The primary goal of reviving this railway line is to enhance economic and touristic ties between Algeria and Tunisia. Resuming this service would facilitate easier and more efficient commercial exchanges and promote tourism by providing a convenient and scenic travel alternative to road and air transport.
Direct rail connectivity between Algiers and Tunis would streamline the transport of goods, reducing logistical costs and increasing trade efficiency. Additionally, tourists could enjoy a comfortable and picturesque travel option, boosting the tourism sectors in both countries. Rail transport is generally more environmentally friendly compared to road and air travel, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions. This line would also strengthen regional connectivity and could serve as a model for other railway infrastructure projects in North Africa.
