Algiers, Algeria | December 3rd, 2024 — As part of Algeria’s robust national strategy to bolster seawater desalination infrastructure, Minister of State for Energy, Mining, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, accompanied by Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi and senior industry officials, conducted an inspection visit to the Tighremt Seawater Desalination Plant. This state-of-the-art facility forms a critical component of the national plan to enhance Algeria’s water security and supply resilience.

The Tighremt plant is one of five cutting-edge desalination facilities currently under construction as part of Algeria’s ambitious national program. This initiative, endorsed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, seeks to elevate the country’s total seawater desalination capacity to an impressive 3.8 million cubic meters per day by 2025.

A Strategic Milestone in Algeria’s Water Infrastructure
Located on a 10-hectare site, the Tighremt plant boasts a design capacity of 300,000 cubic meters of potable water per day. The project is strategically positioned to serve 52 municipalities in Béjaïa, in addition to ensuring water supply for neighboring provinces such as Sétif, Bouira, and Bordj Bou Arréridj.

During the site visit, the delegation received a detailed progress briefing, which highlighted that the project has reached 85% completion. The construction pace has significantly accelerated, with the goal of delivering the plant in record time. Once operational, Tighremt is set to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for potable water, ensuring a sustainable supply for millions of Algerians.

Logistical Excellence: Airlifting Critical Equipment
Sonatrach has mobilized extraordinary logistical efforts to expedite the project’s completion. Since September 2024, a series of airlifts have transported critical equipment to Algeria. Notably, on November 19, a shipment of 49 tons of advanced electrical equipment, including GIS 220 kV power stations, was delivered via the Antonov 124 cargo aircraft to Houari Boumediene International Airport. These components are integral to the plant’s operational framework.

National Strategy for Water Security
This high-level visit underscores the Algerian government’s unwavering commitment to implementing a comprehensive water strategy aimed at addressing the nation’s needs. By 2030, desalination projects are expected to supply 60% of Algeria’s drinking water demand. This forward-thinking approach not only enhances national water security but also ensures sustainable resource management amid mounting environmental challenges.

The Tighremt Desalination Plant stands as a symbol of Algeria’s vision for the future—a testament to its dedication to infrastructure excellence, technological advancement, and environmental stewardship.
