Rif Party Holds Rally in Antwerp to Commemorate Legitimate President of Republic of Rif, Abdelkrim El-Khattabi

Algiers, Algeria | May 29, 2024 — In a significant display of solidarity and historical remembrance, Rif activists organized a rally in Antwerp to commemorate the 98th anniversary of the exile of Abdelkrim El-Khattabi, the legitimate president of the Republic of the Rif. The rally served as a platform to highlight the historical injustices and ongoing struggles faced by the Rifian people.
The activists emphasized that this protest is part of their ongoing efforts to remember the forced exile of El-Khattabi following the brutal triple invasion led by France, Spain, and the Alaouite Sultan Youssef ben Hassan in 1926. This invasion aimed to annihilate the Rifian people, leading to the occupation of the Republic of the Rif and the dismantling of its institutions, including the government and parliament, as well as other symbols of Rifian sovereignty.
Yuba El Ghadiou, a prominent activist, stated, “The message of this rally is that the party and all Rifians who believe in the Rif as their homeland continue to uphold Abdelkrim El-Khattabi as the legitimate president of the Rif. We hold France, Spain, and the Alaouite Sultan historically and morally responsible for the atrocities committed against the Rifian people, particularly the crime of chemical gas bombing.”
El Ghadiou further elaborated on the rally’s key messages:
1. The unwavering recognition of Abdelkrim El-Khattabi as the legitimate leader of the Rif.
2. The historical and moral accountability of France, Spain, and the Alaouite Sultan for the crimes against the Rifian people, especially the use of chemical weapons.
3. The continued assertion of the Rifians’ right to reclaim their state and sovereignty over their occupied territories, currently under Spanish and Moroccan control.
4. A firm rejection of all agreements between Morocco and Spain concerning Rifian lands, in line with El-Khattabi’s stance against such agreements during his exile.
Activists also drew attention to the plight of kidnapped and imprisoned Rifian individuals languishing in Moroccan jails, reaffirming their commitment to fighting the Alaouite regime and sacrificing for the homeland of the Rif.
The rally underscored a deep-seated resistance against historical and ongoing oppressions, with a clear message of resilience and determination to reclaim the Rifian homeland. The event not only commemorated a critical historical figure but also served as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for justice and sovereignty among the Rifian people.
