Riffian Activists Call for the Release of Detainees and an End to Occupation in the Rif Region

Brussels, Belgium – August 28, 2023- In a fervent display of unity and determination, activists hailing from the Rif region assembled in Brussels, Belgium, to passionately advocate for full independence from Morocco and the immediate release of detainees languishing under the Makhzen regime. Led by the steadfast Youba al-Ghadioui, a prominent figure at the forefront of the struggle for Rif’s autonomy, the demonstrators passionately rallied for the departure of the last occupying Moroccan soldier from their homeland. With unyielding determination, they demanded the restoration of the Rif’s sovereignty to its rightful people, free from any imposed conditions.
Demanding Justice and Freedom
The energetic demonstration marked an essential milestone in the ongoing quest for self-determination in the Rif region. Youba al-Ghadioui, the driving force behind the independence movement, highlighted the plight of the Riffians as a systematic genocide and an instance of ethnic cleansing. Akorouali reminded the world of Algeria’s rich legacy in advocating for justice and freedom and urged both the government and the people to continue their efforts on behalf of the marginalized and oppressed.
In the words of rural activist Aziz Akraouli, “We have a single request—to see rural Morocco depart before the situation escalates into an armed confrontation.”
