Algiers, Algeria | November 10th, 2024 — Two recent incidents have underscored the growing divide between the Moroccan government and its people over their contrasting stances on Palestine and the Zionist entity. In the first incident, two ships transporting weapons to the Zionist entity were allowed to dock in Morocco’s Tangier port after being rejected by Spanish authorities in Algeciras. This move contradicts Morocco’s official support for the Palestinian cause and has intensified public frustration. Spanish officials, wary of the ships’ potential contents, permitted the vessels to continue only under strict conditions, including avoiding all Spanish ports unless the cargo’s nature was disclosed.

Simultaneously, Moroccan expatriates in the Netherlands were involved in a separate incident defending Palestinian supporters in Amsterdam. The conflict arose after fans of the Zionist football club Maccabi Tel Aviv disrespected the Palestinian flag, leading to tensions with pro-Palestinian activists, including Moroccan expats, who publicly denounced the actions against Palestinian rights and expressed solidarity with Gaza.

Backlash has spread across Moroccan social media, with users expressing dismay at tacit governmental support for the Zionist entity despite widespread public solidarity with Palestine. Activists protested outside the port in Tangier, condemning the monarchy’s decision to allow the Zionist-bound vessels to dock. Many on social media highlighted the incongruity between Morocco’s professed support for Palestine and the actions of the government. “We stand with Gaza, yet the monarchy allows Zionist-bound ships into our ports. Spain rejected them, yet here they are in Tangier,” wrote one user, echoing public sentiment.

These incidents reflect a trend, as this is not the first time that Morocco has accepted Zionist-bound vessels after they were denied entry by Spain. In May, Rabat permitted the cargo ship Marian, carrying weaponry from India, to dock in Tangier after Madrid refused it entry. Another Zionist navy-operated ship was similarly welcomed in June, despite ongoing atrocities in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

This seeming contradiction is particularly sensitive given King Mohammed VI’s leadership of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s El Quds Committee, a body dedicated to advocating for Palestinian rights and the status of El Quds . Moroccans see the docking of Zionist-bound ships as a betrayal of this role, further eroding public trust and amplifying resentment. The incidents have exposed a profound divergence in Morocco between public pro-Palestinian solidarity and government actions, leaving citizens increasingly vocal in their disapproval.
