Algiers- Algeria, May 11, 2024 – In a poignant speech, Mr. Mustapha Yahi, Secretary-General of the National Democratic Rally (RND), delivered a powerful address at a popular rally in Bejaia Province. He eloquently touched upon the rich historical significance of Bejaia while also addressing pressing issues of local development and national unity.
Yahi began by paying tribute to Bejaia’s historic role as a symbol of resistance and jihad against French colonialism. He praised the bravery of the people of Bejaia who courageously defended their homeland, honor, and identity against French invaders. Yahi emphasized Bejaia’s pivotal role in Algeria’s liberation revolution, highlighting the significance of the Soummam conference in the struggle for independence.
The commemoration of the National Memory Day, marking the 79th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, held special significance in Bejaia. Yahi condemned the heinous crimes committed by French colonialism in kherrata, Guelma, and Setif, describing them as among the ugliest and most heinous crimes in human history. He stressed that the memory of these massacres would remain etched in the Algerian people’s memory and rejected any attempts to erase or trivialize them.
Yahi expressed strong support for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s steadfast stance on addressing historical memory with France. He commended Tebboune’s efforts to recover the skulls of resistance fighters, demand France’s acknowledgment of its crimes, and seek compensation for victims, including those affected by nuclear tests in the Sahara. Yahi believed that settling the memory file would strengthen the relationship between Algeria and France based on mutual respect and trust.
Shifting focus to local development, Yahi urged elected representatives, leaders, and activists to contribute to advancing development efforts in Bejaia. He highlighted several key projects, including the construction of the lead and zinc mine of Tala Hamza and Oued Amizour, which will create thousands of jobs and position Algeria in the international market. Yahi also called for the rehabilitation of the port of Bejaia, the modernization of national roads, and the acceleration of various infrastructure projects in the region.
In addressing national priorities, Yahi emphasized the RND’s support for combating hate speech, racism, and extremist groups threatening Algeria’s security and stability. He applauded recent amendments to the Penal Code aimed at protecting Algerian values and combating cross-border crime. Additionally, Yahi expressed support for the People’s National Army’s strategy to strengthen defense capabilities.
Yahi concluded his speech by calling on the citizens of Bejaia to stand united against divisive plans by terrorist entities and to contribute to building a strong, secure, and prosperous Algeria. He reaffirmed the RND’s commitment to making the upcoming presidential elections a success and condemned the genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people.
In summary, Yahi’s speech encapsulated the importance of honoring the past, addressing present challenges, and working towards a brighter future for Algeria. Through historical remembrance, local development, and national unity, Yahi emphasized the resilience and determination of the Algerian people in shaping their destiny.
“Freedom for Palestine and victory for Gaza. Long live free, strong, and prosperous Algeria. Glory and eternity to our martyrs. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.”
