Role of Civil Society in Raising Awareness of Importance of Upcoming Election Highlighted in Timimoun, Biskra

Algiers, Algeria | August 14th, 2024 — The critical role of civil society in raising awareness about the importance of participating in the upcoming presidential election on September 7 was highlighted on Wednesday in Timimoun during an interactive workshop titled “Effective Citizenship and Electoral Culture,” organized by the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC).

During this event, academics and association leaders underscored the significance of active participation in the forthcoming electoral event, describing it as a “crucial step in the democratic process” and a continuation of Algeria’s achievements in multisectoral development. Mohamed Bekri, a member of the ONSC, emphasized that this workshop is part of a series of meetings initiated by the observatory to promote coordination and cooperation within the associative movement. He stressed the importance of strengthening societal awareness and embedding an electoral culture across various social categories, aiming to ensure that civil society plays an integral role in mobilizing citizens for the election.

Abdelkrim Benkhaled, a sociologist from the University of Adrar, added that the awareness cultivated within the associative movement prepares individuals to address the concerns of their social environment, making associations the cornerstone of reinforcing the values of citizenship. He also highlighted the influence of societal and educational factors in encouraging engagement in associative activities, which are essential in shaping a vibrant and participatory civil society.

Participants at the workshop also engaged in discussions about the current state of associative action and explored strategies to promote it across various fields to meet the citizens’ expectations. This emphasis on civil society’s role is mirrored in similar events across the country.

In Biskra, at a conference titled “The Role of Civil Society in Electoral Awareness and Culture,” held on the same day at the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Arid Regions, participants called for massive participation in the upcoming electoral appointments. The speakers argued that massive electoral participation enables citizens to actively shape the future of their country, making it a fundamental aspect of a healthy democratic society.

Hafid Chokri, another member of the ONSC, underscored that participating in the electoral process is essential for realizing the ambitions of society, as it entrusts the elected representative with the power to make effective decisions. Associative activist Lahcen Serghoud noted the importance of political awareness among young people and civil society actors, which is cultivated through participation in political and associative life. He urged voters to make informed choices after closely following the programs and commitments of the candidates.

Henia Ahmid, a law professor at the University of Biskra, emphasized that access to power through popular support is an indicator of a healthy society and a reflection of the principles of justice and equality. This conference, organized jointly by the ONSC and the local authorities of Biskra, brought together representatives from local associations, civil society organizations, and local elected officials, all united in their call for a strong turnout in the upcoming elections.
