Algiers, Algeria | October 30th, 2024 — Abdelkader Taleb Omar, Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Algeria, has condemned Morocco’s intensified violations in Western Sahara, where the Moroccan government, known as the “Makhzen,” has escalated its campaign of land seizures, transferring Sahrawi territories to Zionist companies.

During an interview on “Guest of the Morning” on Channel 2 radio, Taleb Omar highlighted how Morocco’s occupation tactics have transcended mere land confiscation to encompass a full-scale repression strategy aimed at silencing political dissent through arbitrary arrests and imprisonment of activists. Moreover, the ambassador noted that access to the occupied territories is tightly restricted, with humanitarian organizations and journalists systematically blocked to conceal the severe human rights abuses occurring on the ground—an issue documented in part by recent UN reports.

According to Taleb Omar, the situation in Western Sahara has increasingly destabilized Morocco’s internal structure. The mounting pressure has triggered daily protests among Moroccans, many of whom now resort to mass emigration as economic hardship and disillusionment intensify. The ambassador emphasized that Morocco’s resources have been depleted by its extensive efforts to garner international support through bribery and espionage. This coercive approach, he asserted, reveals that countries backing Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara do so under duress or financial inducement, rather than out of respect for legitimate sovereignty claims.

The ambassador further criticized the Moroccan leadership for betraying its own national interests and sacred principles by aligning with Zionist forces, a relationship he described as a calculated trade-off. “Today, the Makhzen has chosen to abandon the Palestinian cause, trading away its principles and independence in exchange for foreign support in the occupation of Western Sahara. Meanwhile, the Zionist entity continues its systematic targeting and destruction of the Palestinian people,” Taleb Omar remarked.

In addressing the international dimension of the Western Sahara issue, Taleb Omar asserted that the core problem lies not in the absence of international mandates but in the lack of enforcement. He pointed out that certain powerful states, some of whom hold permanent seats on the UN Security Council, actively obstruct the implementation of resolutions to protect their strategic interests, thereby allowing Morocco’s violations to continue unchecked.

This persistent obstruction, he argued, underscores the urgent need for reform within the international system, emphasizing that the principles of democracy and justice must prevail. “We have repeatedly witnessed the UN General Assembly’s resolutions being overturned by the Security Council, an unacceptable contradiction that must be addressed. The Security Council must respect the collective will of the UN member states,” he asserted.

In a resolute conclusion, Taleb Omar affirmed the Sahrawi people’s unwavering commitment to their struggle for self-determination, bolstered by the solidarity of supportive nations. “The Sahrawi people will continue their fight for freedom and independence, and with the support of our friends, we are determined to claim our rightful place among free nations,” he stated.
