ALGIERS- In Morocco, investigations continue into the notorious “Sahara’s Escobar” case, involving 25 individuals, including Saïd Naciri, the president of the Wydad Casablanca football team, and Abdennabi Biaoui, the president of the Oriental Regional Council.
Insider sources reveal that the investigative circle is now expanding, potentially dragging government ministers into the scrutiny to unravel the complexities of the “Case of the Century.” This case appears poised to expose prominent figures in politics, sports, finance, and business.
The sources also affirm that the widened scope of investigations may encompass parliamentarians in the Moroccan government, the president of a regional council, and figures in the Moroccan media. This move aims to uncover the intricacies of their interwoven relationships with Haj Ibrahim, also known as “El Mali.” The latter earned the moniker “Sahara’s Escobar” and successfully implicated high-profile individuals from inside the Nouveau Centre de Détention prison, where he has been detained since 2019.
The Attorney General at the Court of Appeals in Casablanca announced in a public statement that, within the framework of investigations carried out by the National Judicial Police under their supervision, further individuals are suspected of involvement with a foreign national convicted for international drug trafficking, currently serving a prison sentence. The investigations revealed suspicions about individuals committing acts related to the same facts for which the aforementioned foreign national and others were previously convicted.
The Attorney General highlighted the complexity and intertwining nature of these acts, requiring extensive time for investigations to respect legal provisions and under the direct supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
The results of the investigations have led to the presentation of 25 individuals before the public prosecutor, including those holding prosecutorial or law enforcement responsibilities, in addition to others who committed acts linked to the case.
