ALGIERS- (SPS) The representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations and coordinator with the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) Sidi Mohamed Omar affirmed that the message conveyed by the Sahrawi people, before the beginning of the unofficial consultations with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, “is the categorical rejection of the fait accompli policy and solutions outside the international legality”.

For Sidi Mohamed Omar, achieving peace in the region and decolonizing Africa’s last colony are dependent on the existence of a real political will from the Moroccan occupier.

“The personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara Staffan De Mistura will hold next week unofficial bilateral consultations in New York with the representatives of the two sides to the conflict, namely; the Polisario Front and Morocco, before the presentation of his bi-annual briefing to the Council of Security in April,” he told APS.

These consultations, added Sidi Mohamed Omar, aim to assess the political process, analyse the positions and continue the search for new formulas accepted by the two sides in order to revive the peace process in Western Sahara under the aegis of the United Nations, and to reach a just and lasting peace that enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.

Referring to the “peace process” as a framework for the resolution of the conflict of Western Sahara, he affirmed that “the Sahrawi side has concretely proven its genuine willingness to contribute to the achievement of just and lasting peace and has made several concessions, while the Moroccan occupier is attached only to the process and not to the choice of peace,” by continuing its attempts to impose the fait accompli by force in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic.
