Sahrawi Ambassador Abdelkader Taleb Omar Commends African Union’s Stance on Western Sahara, Algeria’s Role in Fostering Liberation Movements

Algiers, Algeria | July 24th, 2024 —  In an insightful interview with Dzair Tube during the International Seminar on the Algerian Revolution’s African Dimension, held at the El Aurassi Hotel in Algiers, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria, commended the African Union (AU) for its principled support of Western Sahara. He lauded the AU’s steadfast position and its pivotal role in advocating for the Sahrawi cause.

Taleb Omar highlighted the persistent challenges faced by Western Sahara due to Morocco’s obstruction of the self-determination referendum, noting that this impediment has spurred the African Union to take decisive action. He underscored that the recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) as a member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), and subsequently as a founding member of the African Union, represents a natural and appropriate solution in light of Morocco’s lack of sincerity regarding the referendum.

He emphasized that international organizations, including the United Nations, have not exerted sufficient pressure on Morocco to advance a resolution. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a unified African stance to bring about the end of Africa’s last colony and to ensure comprehensive liberation, allowing Africa to focus on economic, social, and cultural development. Taleb Omar stressed that Africa’s unity is crucial for reclaiming sovereignty and resources, as well as for achieving significant progress on the global stage.

In this context, Taleb Omar also praised the role of Algeria in fostering liberation movements and advancing the continent’s goals. He commended Algeria’s historical role in supporting African freedom fighters in the 1960s and its continued commitment to this cause. He noted that the renewed Algeria, under its current leadership, is actively pursuing development, sovereignty, and global recognition, including efforts to secure a seat on the UN Security Council.

Taleb Omar’s remarks celebrated Algeria’s ongoing role as a champion of liberation and justice, emphasizing that the Algerian revolution and its current leaders maintain their fervor and dedication to advocating for global justice and fairness.
