Algiers, Algeria | December 13th, 2024 — The Sahrawi diaspora in France, joined by diverse international supporters, will stage a protest on Saturday at Place de la République in Paris. This demonstration rebukes French President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial endorsement of Morocco’s sovereignty claims over Western Sahara, a stance that contravenes international law and United Nations decolonization mandates.

Representatives from Sahrawi organizations, Arab, African, and Latin American communities, and human rights activists will denounce France’s perceived complicity in undermining Western Sahara’s right to self-determination. The protest aims to pressure France to fulfill its international obligations and honor principles of freedom and democracy.

Recent actions, including Macron’s letter to Morocco’s king affirming the contentious autonomy proposal, have sparked global outrage. Analysts from France’s National Center for Scientific Research labeled the policy shift a “reckless colonial gamble” jeopardizing France’s partnerships with African nations supporting Sahrawi independence.

French lawmaker Jean-Paul Lecoq criticized the stance, emphasizing its discord with international norms and France’s historical neutrality. This protest underscores growing discontent with policies prioritizing economic ties over justice, calling for a resolute global stand on decolonization and human rights.
