Algiers, Algeria | July 26th, 2024 —  In a recent interview on “Remontada” with journalist Mustapha Bounif, Malainin Lakhal, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Ethiopia and the African Union, praised Algeria’s steadfast adherence to historical justice and its robust support for the Sahrawi cause. Lakhal’s comments underscored Algeria’s enduring commitment to the principles of sovereignty and resistance against colonial and Zionist influences.

Lakhal commended Algeria’s historical achievement in expelling French colonial forces, positioning the country as aligned with the righteous side of history. He contrasted this with the positions of France, Morocco, and the “Zionist entity,” arguing that Algeria’s actions reflect a principled stand on international issues of sovereignty and justice.

Algeria’s opposition to the Zionist entity was highlighted by Lakhal as a significant aspect of its foreign policy, which he viewed as emblematic of a broader commitment to resisting any forms of unjust imposition. “Algeria’s principled stance against the Zionist entity serves as a powerful example for any nation that values its sovereignty and integrity,” Lakhal asserted.

He further emphasized that Algeria’s support for the Sahrawi people is a natural extension of its broader commitment to opposing unjust conditions imposed by external actors. Lakhal noted that Algeria has consistently demonstrated its dedication to the Sahrawi cause by refusing to accept any attempts to impose similar conditions on the Sahrawi people.

Lakhal’s remarks were also a reaffirmation of Algeria’s role as a supportive neighbor and ally in the quest for Sahrawi self-determination. He emphasized that Algeria’s stance is deeply rooted in its historical legacy and principles, reflecting its unwavering support for international legitimacy and justice.

In concluding his interview, Lakhal reaffirmed that Algeria’s position remains consistent with its historical legacy and principles. He underscored the country’s resolve to confront regional challenges with a just and principled approach, reinforcing its role as a champion of self-determination and resistance against external pressures.

Lakhal’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within the Sahrawi leadership, reinforcing the reality of Algeria as a steadfast ally in the pursuit of justice and sovereignty for the Sahrawi people.

Sahrawi Diplomat Malainin Lakhal: Western Sahara Issue is a Struggle for Liberation and Resistance

The diplomat provided a compelling overview of the Western Sahara conflict as an essential struggle for liberation from colonial dominance. Lakhal, who has a background in writing and journalism, articulated a profound perspective on the conflict’s historical and ongoing significance.

Lakhal described the conflict as a fundamental battle for liberation, underscoring that resistance remains the Sahrawi people’s primary and enduring course of action. His comments reflected a deep-seated conviction in the necessity of resistance against colonial impositions and a commitment to the cause of self-determination.

He highlighted the responsible engagement of the Polisario Front and the SADR with international peace initiatives. Lakhal emphasized that this engagement is rooted in the leadership’s belief in resolving conflicts through rational solutions that honor international law and the collective aspirations of the region’s peoples.

Lakhal detailed how this principled stance led the Sahrawi people to embrace U.S. mediation efforts, agree to a ceasefire in the 1990s, and remain open to participating in a referendum on self-determination. These actions, he noted, illustrate the Sahrawi commitment to peaceful resolution and their readiness to engage with diplomatic processes aimed at achieving a just and lasting settlement.

Algeria Condemns France’s Endorsement of Moroccan Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara: Calls for Accountability and Criticizes Timing and Impact

In a recent development, the French government’s endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara has sparked a strong condemnation from Algeria. The Algerian government has denounced France’s support for the autonomy plan as “unexpected, untimely, and counterproductive,” and has indicated its intention to “draw all necessary consequences” from this stance.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally expressed profound regret and disapproval over France’s backing of Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which is framed within Moroccan sovereignty. This endorsement, recently communicated to Algerian officials, has been criticized for reflecting “dubious political calculations, morally questionable assumptions, and unsupported legal interpretations.”

According to the Algerian ministry, France’s support does not contribute to a peaceful resolution of the Western Sahara conflict but rather exacerbates the deadlock by backing Morocco’s longstanding autonomy plan, which has been in place for over seventeen years. The ministry highlighted that the Western Sahara issue is widely recognized internationally as a matter of decolonization. France’s position, it argued, distorts this process by legitimizing a colonial fait accompli and supporting Morocco’s contested sovereignty over the territory.

The statement from Algeria also criticized the timing of France’s decision, noting that it comes from a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The Algerian government contended that France’s stance diverges from the council’s resolutions and international legal standards, which should ideally facilitate the search for a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.

Furthermore, the Algerian government asserted that France’s decision undermines ongoing United Nations efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict, hindering progress toward regional peace, stability, and security. In conclusion, Algeria has reiterated its commitment to holding France accountable for the consequences of its decision and its impact on the conflict.
