ALGIERS- In a highly anticipated televised debate leading up to the upcoming legislative elections in Spain, the leader of the People’s Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, made a significant pledge to return his country to its previous position on the Sahrawi dossier. Feijoo’s promise, centered around transparency and a balanced approach, has garnered widespread support and propelled his party’s popularity ahead of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), according to leading newspaper El Mundo.

Feijoo’s resolute stance came in response to criticism aimed at the outgoing Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, who unilaterally shifted Spain’s position on the Western Sahara conflict, aligning it with the expansionist thesis of the Moroccan government. Feijoo wasted no time in challenging Sanchez, demanding that he disclose the true motivations behind this abrupt change.

“I urge you to reveal the undisclosed agreements with Morocco that led to your sudden shift in the Western Sahara conflict, without consulting the government, the political class, or the opposition,” Feijoo boldly declared, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in foreign policy decision-making.

Under Feijoo’s leadership, a victorious PP in the July 23 elections would mark a definitive return to Spain’s previous position on the Sahrawi file—one characterized by neutrality, balance, and transparency. Unlike the current administration, Feijoo assured that his government would engage in inclusive decision-making, seeking input from the Leader of the Opposition and obtaining permission from Congress before adopting any criteria that bind the nation in matters of foreign policy.

The televised debate not only showcased Feijoo’s principled stance but also solidified his party’s standing in the polls, surpassing the PSOE. With increasing public support, the PP leader’s commitment to restoring Spain’s previous position on the Sahrawi dossier resonates with voters who value integrity, open dialogue, and a measured approach in matters of international affairs.

Feijoo’s vow to navigate Spain’s foreign policy through consultation and transparency has struck a chord with the electorate, who eagerly anticipate a return to a more balanced and principled approach on the Western Sahara issue. As the election day approaches, the Spanish public is looking to Feijoo and the PP to bring stability, credibility, and fairness to the country’s foreign policy decisions.

In a rapidly changing global landscape, it is imperative for Spain to uphold its longstanding values and principles in international relations. Feijoo’s unwavering commitment to transparency and his promise to restore Spain’s position on the Sahrawi file signify a significant step toward reclaiming those values, ensuring that Spain’s voice will be heard with clarity and consistency on the world stage once again.
