Algiers, Algeria | August 28th, 2024 — In a press conference held at the Sahrawi embassy in Algiers on Wednesday, Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Sidati hailed the closing statement of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) summit as a significant diplomatic victory for Western Sahara. Sidati’s comments emphasize the growing global recognition of the Sahrawi cause and the crucial role played by Algeria in championing the rights of oppressed peoples.

Minister Sidati commended both the Algerian government and its populace for their unwavering support for the Sahrawi and Palestinian peoples. He highlighted Algeria’s persistent advocacy as instrumental in shaping international dialogue on these issues.

The TICAD summit, recently concluded in Tokyo, issued a final communiqué that Sidati described as a “diplomatic triumph” for Western Sahara. He pointed out that the statement affirmed the right of all African Union (AU) members to engage in summits and partnership meetings, a stance that Sidati views as a decisive victory for the Sahrawi people and their quest for recognition.

Sidati used the occasion to critique Morocco’s actions within the African context, accusing it of promoting a “distorted image” of the continent marked by corruption and violations of the AU’s founding principles. He criticized Morocco for undermining African unity and cooperation, and condemned its policies regarding Western Sahara, characterizing them as “criminal” and rooted in “spying, thuggery, and bribery.”
