Algiers, Algeria | August 28th, 2024 — In a press conference held at the Sahrawi embassy in Algiers on Wednesday, Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Sidati delivered a robust defense of the Sahrawi people’s ongoing struggle for self-determination and criticized recent international developments. Sidati’s comments underscore the Sahrawi leadership’s determination to persevere despite geopolitical challenges and perceived biases.

Sidati expressed unwavering confidence in the Sahrawi people’s resolve, asserting that their commitment to the struggle for independence remains resolute despite various international pressures and delays. “No matter the attempts and positions, they will not undermine the will and determination of the Sahrawi people,” Sidati declared emphatically.

Addressing recent shifts in France’s stance on the Sahrawi issue, Sidati condemned the position articulated by French President Emmanuel Macron as “hostile and not new.” He accused France of playing a historically antagonistic role in the Western Sahara conflict, citing its involvement in the occupation and the 2007 proposal of an autonomy plan to Morocco. Sidati described this plan as a product of French orchestration, not a genuine resolution to the conflict.

According to Sidati, the French autonomy plan represents a scheme crafted within French circles rather than a legitimate solution to the Sahrawi struggle.

In contrast, Sidati praised Algeria for its unwavering support, attributing it to the country’s revolutionary heritage and commitment to justice. He highlighted Algeria’s alignment with the principles of the November Revolution, which underpin its support for the Sahrawi cause. Sidati’s praise underscores the historical solidarity between Algeria and the Sahrawi people, rooted in shared values and a commitment to self-determination.
