Algiers, Algeria | November 07th, 2024 —The Sahrawi government issued a strong statement on Wednesday, November 6, condemning Moroccan King Mohammed VI’s address on the anniversary of what Morocco terms the “Green March.” In its response, the Sahrawi government highlighted the “blatant distortions and propaganda” in the king’s speech, accusing Morocco of continuing its defiance of international law regarding Western Sahara.

In its statement, the Sahrawi government referred to the anniversary as the “Black March,” a reference to Morocco’s military incursion into Western Sahara in 1975. The government criticized the speech as part of a longstanding strategy by the Moroccan monarchy to perpetuate “an illusion and deceitful rhetoric” aimed at undermining the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people. The statement also highlighted Morocco’s disregard for United Nations and African Union resolutions, stating that the king’s address only “demonstrates the Moroccan regime’s obstinance and its refusal to abandon expansionist ambitions.”

Denouncing the Moroccan king’s words in the “strongest terms,” the Sahrawi government accused him of attempting to distort the historical and legal reality surrounding the Western Sahara issue, which it described as a clear-cut case of decolonization. The Sahrawi statement added that King Mohammed VI’s speech was a “repetition of the same hollow rhetoric” aimed at diverting Moroccan public opinion from Morocco’s “profound internal structural crisis.”

The Sahrawi government further emphasized that the global community is fully aware of Morocco’s obstruction of every stage of the African-UN settlement plan for Western Sahara, including its ultimate rejection of a referendum on self-determination. The statement argued that Morocco’s latest efforts to promote dubious solutions amount to desperate attempts to avoid letting the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination—a right they symbolically declared to the world on February 27, 1976, by proclaiming the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The Sahrawi government concluded with a resolute declaration of its commitment to its “liberation march,” reiterating that the Sahrawi people will continue their struggle by all legitimate means, including armed resistance, until they achieve their non-negotiable goals of freedom, independence, and sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
