Johannesburg, South Africa – August 23, 2023 – In a resounding diplomatic victory for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), President Brahim Ghali is participating in the BRICS Summit, which commenced on Tuesday in Johannesburg, South Africa. This move, marked by an invitation from the host nation, underscores the SADR’s growing global recognition and the failure of the Moroccan regime’s attempts to hinder its participation.

Previously, a piece titled “The Makhzen Regime, Unwelcome in BRICS” published by Algeria54 highlighted the stark diplomatic setback experienced by the Moroccan regime. Resigned to the reality of the SADR’s presence at this influential geopolitical gathering, designed to establish the foundations for a more equitable and multilateral global order, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a press statement on August 19 via MAP, a mouthpiece of the regime.

Interestingly, the statement from Nasser Bourita’s department omitted any reference to its inability to persuade key BRICS members, including India and Brazil, to oppose the SADR’s participation. This omission is telling, especially considering the Makhzen regime’s targeted criticism of South Africa – a nation renowned for its historical struggle against apartheid and its commitment to just causes worldwide, including those of Palestine and the Sahrawi people.

This statement by the Moroccan regime seems to be a calculated attempt to tarnish Algeria’s image through propagandist networks and affiliated agents, propagating false claims of Algeria’s membership application rejection. This smear campaign follows the remarkable successes of President Tebboune’s diplomatic visits to Russia and China, characterized by the signing of significant investment agreements. These accomplishments underscore Algeria’s pivotal role geopolitically, bridging the Mediterranean and Africa.

Coincidentally, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated his country’ stance in favor of self-determination, aligning with recent calls by member nations of the Non-Aligned Movement for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions advocating for a Sahrawi self-determination referendum. This expression of support came just days after the resolution’s adoption during the Non-Aligned Movement’s meeting in Baku.

President Brahim Ghali’s presence on August 22 at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg marks another milestone for the Sahrawi cause. This achievement follows the SADR’ successful participation in the EU-Africa Summit held in Brussels and the Japan-Africa Summit hosted in Tunis. It underscores the increasing global recognition of the Sahrawi people’s aspirations and the resilience of their struggle for self-determination and justice.

As the BRICS Summit progresses, all eyes are on the presence of Brahim Ghali, symbolizing a renewed wave of diplomatic triumph for the Sahrawi people and another stark reminder of the persistent international support for their cause.
