ALGIERS- In a strongly worded statement issued this Monday, the Sahrawi Sports Federation (SSF) has condemned Moroccan attempts to exploit sports for political ends. The SSF expressed its solidarity with USM Alger, a prominent Algerian football club, amidst escalating tensions.
“The SSF is closely following Moroccan maneuvers to use sports for political purposes through the involvement of RC Berkane in a battle that is doomed to failure,” the statement read.
The Sahrawi Sports Federation highlighted its concern over the recent actions of RC Berkane, a Moroccan football club, accusing it of becoming entangled in political agendas that undermine the integrity of sports. According to the SSF, RC Berkane’s involvement in such activities represents a blatant attempt to leverage the sporting arena for political gains.
This condemnation comes in the wake of RS Berkane’s refusal to participate in a scheduled match against USM Alger, citing disputes over jersey displays. Algerian authorities and football officials have criticized RC Berkane’s attempt to feature politically charged imagery on their jerseys, a move deemed in violation of regulations set forth by both CAF and FIFA.
The SSF expressed appreciation for the firm stance taken by Algerian authorities in response to the incident. It called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA to intervene swiftly and decisively to address what it sees as provocations and excesses by the Moroccan regime in the realm of sports.
The statement underlined the SSF’s commitment to upholding the principles of fair play and non-political interference in sports. It emphasized the need for sporting competitions to remain free from political agendas, ensuring that athletes and clubs can compete on a level playing field without external influences.
Furthermore, the SSF reiterated its unwavering support for USM Alger and expressed solidarity with Algerian football fans who have rallied behind the club. It praised the resilience and determination of Algerian athletes in the face of external pressures and affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of sports in the region.
