Algiers, Algeria | July 26th, 2024 — In a recent interview with Dzair Tube, Sahrawi writer Sayed Hamdi Yahthia expressed strong disapproval of France’s delayed endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy proposal for Western Sahara. He questioned why it took France so long to recognize this stance and criticized the impact of French support on the protracted conflict in the region.
Sayed Hamdi Yahthia accused France of being a consistent ally of Morocco since 1974, arguing that this longstanding support has significantly hindered efforts to resolve the Western Sahara issue. “France has consistently backed Morocco,” he stated, “and if it had not been for this support, we might have seen a resolution to the conflict by now.”
He underscored that France’s alignment with Moroccan interests has included opposing Western Sahara’s pursuit of independence both on the ground and at the United Nations. According to Sayed Hamdi, France’s vetoes have consistently obstructed the possibility of a fair and peaceful resolution to the Western Sahara dispute.
Sayed Hamdi also remarked on France’s diminished global influence, noting its reduced role in African affairs and its waning stature within the European Union. “France is grappling with significant internal challenges and has struggled to maintain its influence within the African Union,” he said, “and it has been increasingly marginalized by many African nations.”
Furthermore, Hamdi suggested that France’s recent recognition of Morocco’s autonomy proposal might be a strategic move to regain some influence in Africa. “The decision to support autonomy appears to be a way for Morocco to offer France a chance to regain some of its influence in Africa after being sidelined,” he observed.
In conclusion, Hamdi Yahthia argued that France’s position on the Western Sahara issue remains ineffective and unbalanced. He emphasized that the resolute determination of the Sahrawi people to achieve independence will ultimately overshadow France’s stance. “Despite France’s position, the steadfast resolve of the Sahrawi people will ensure that our struggle for independence persists and remains unaltered,” he asserted.
